Deze vernieuwde sound zal ook terug te horen zijn op hun nieuwe album. Inspiratie hiervoor vonden ze in de muziek van Daft Punk, Justice en Philippe Zdar van Cassius. Het maak-proces komt in de buurt van RoyalBlood – het debuutalbum van de band.
Mike “We sort of stumbled on this sound, and it was immediately fun to play. That’s what sparked the creativity on the new album, the chasing of that feeling. It’s weird, though – if you think back to ‘Figure it Out’, it kind of contains the embryo of this album. We realised that we didn’t have to completely destroy what we’d created so far; we just had to shift it, change it. On paper, it’s a small reinvention. But when you hear it, it sounds so fresh.”
Het terugkerende thema op het album is de keerzijde van succes en hoe belangrijk het is om hierop te kunnen reflecteren. Dit idee ontstond bij Mike in Las Vegas met een espresso martini in zijn hand. Hij besloot dat het zijn laatste drankje zou zijn. Dit heeft zoveel positieve invloed op zijn creativiteit gehad, dat de band besloot het grootste gedeelte van het album zelf te schrijven. Voor de productie schakelden ze wel hulp in. Zo is ‘Boilermaker’ geproduceerd door Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stoneage) en ‘Who Needs Friend’ door Grammy-winnaar Paul Epworth.
