Vier jaar na de release van zijn laatste werk, komt de Noorse singer-songwriter Thomas Dybdahl met zijn inmiddels zevende studio album op de proppen, getiteld The Great Plains. Dybdahl (1979), geboren in Sandnes in Zuid-Noorwegen, omschrijft zijn stijl als melancholiek en romantisch. Ooit begon hij als gitarist, geïnspireerd door bands als Metallica en Led Zeppelin. Die rol vervulde hij ook in de Noorse band Quadraphonics. Solo tapt Thomas uit een heel ander vaatje, en brengt hij folk-pop, met een vleugje country en jazz. In plaats van explosies probeert hij implosies in zijn muziek te laten plaatsvinden. Hij heeft een hoge en soepele falsetstem, waardoor zijn weemoedige folk vaak wordt vergeleken met singer-songwriters als Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Ray LaMontagne en Damien Rice.
Over dit nieuwe album zegt de voor een Grammy genomineerde Dybdahl: “I’ve been lucky enough to get write with some of my favorite musicians on this album and I cannot wait until February to share this music and go on tour with these wonderful songs. The songs on this album are mostly about being in a place in life where you suddenly have time to look in the mirror and into yourself, only to discover that you almost do not recognize the man looking back at you. Songs about the realization that you don’t know as well as you thought, songs about childhood, family and songs about those moments, that in their wake, you can clearly see what was important for everything that came afterward. ”
