Villagers is het project van de Ierse singer-songwriter Conor O’Brien. The Art Of Pretending To Swim is het vierde studio album van Villagers. Als je het live in de RAK studio opgenomen album Where Have You Been All My Life (2016) niet meetelt.
The Art Of Pretending To Swim volgt het intieme Darling Arithmetic (2015) op en grijpt qua intensiteit terug naar debuutplaat Becoming A Jackal (2010) en opvolger ‘{Awayland}’ (2013). Conor O’Brien schreef, produceerde en speelde zo’n beetje alle instrumenten zelf in zijn studio in Dublin. Nieuw zijn de ingetogen dansbare beats en basloopjes vol soul. Een mix van digitaal en analoog. Dansbaar en introspectief. De songs schipperen tussen hoop en existentiële angsten.
Met The Art Of Pretending To Swim bewijst Conor O’Brien opnieuw tekstueel en qua zangstem een geheel eigen idioom te hebben.

Balanced with subtle aspects and lyrical themes that embrace existential fears and hopes in this desperate, technologically-centred dystopian age, The Art Of Pretending To Swim is the most brilliantly realised Villagers album to date.
